video doing rounds on Twitter showing a man beating another one as others watched has caused a stir following claims, as captured in some of the captions, that the violent man was the Guinean president beating up a minister.

The video which has over 513,000 views brought about different reactions with many wishing their presidents were that ruthless while others rebuked violence.

Background

Guinea is a West African country on the Atlantic coast bordering Mali, Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Liberia. The country has experienced myriad challenges including the rebels’ incursions on its border with Liberia and Sierra Leone in the year 2000, a 2-year junta rule from 2008 and the Ebola outbreak in 2014 which killed 11,300 people. The return of civilian rule in 2010 saw President Alpha Condé take power. He was re-elected for a second and final term in 2015.

President Condé is seeking a third term after a new constitution was passed in March with the opposition unsuccessfully boycotting the referendum. Mass rallies were held for nearly a year to oppose Condé from seeking a third term. His proponents, however, claim the new constitution reset the counter on the two-term limit.
